I just saw the front page article in Friday's T&G about the new Worcester Stat Hospital. There was an artist's rendering of what the site will look like when completed. And there, in the center of the new hospital grounds, was the clock tower. The turret was also present. Does this mean that these two historic buildings are finally safe?

As part of the demolition negotiation concerning most of the historic state hospital complex, a Reuse Study is underway for the Clock Tower and Hooper Turret.  That study is almost complete and the study found that it economically feasible for the Clock Tower and Hooper Turret to be restored and used if other land is incorporated in the project, the Department of Mental Health declares the buildings as surplus, and Federal and State Historic Tax are available.  We are hopeful that at some point, a viable use for the properties will come to fruition.  The location is prime with the new psychiatric hospital, U Mass Hospital and the biotech industry nearby.  The current economy is a challenge.

A system of tunnels also branched off like spokes from a central hub behind the privavte building leading to different wards of the hospital.

The Clock Tower and Hooper Turret will not really be safe until they are restored and utilized.  There currently are no plans to demolish them nor are there plans to restore them.  We are working hard with the state to figure out a new use for the buildings and a way to market them so they will be attractive to a potential purchaser.  We were recently disappointed to find out that they do not qualify for federal historic tax credits.

I appreciate your interest and would be happy to continue the discussion.

I remember the time when our family went in the Clock Tower and Hooper Turret. It is not really safe. There's a need of demolition or renovation.
