Ghost Signs

Throughout Worcester

A throwback to Worcester’s industrial past, the fading painted advertisement signs on brick buildings can be spotted in many different parts of the city, if you look closely.  Hand painted predominantly during the 1920s and 1930s, they are now tributes to companies and products which are long gone. Their use declined in the mid-20th century with the arrival of billboard technology, but recently, there has been a movement to revive and incorporate these signs into a refurbished building exteriors.  Cities such as Fort Collins, CO, Philadelphia, PA, and Detroit, MI, have recently undertaken efforts to rehabilitate and preserve ghost signs.
