Lenox: The Real Estate Development that Made the Developer – Tuesday, May 23, 2017

An illustrated talk by Don Chamberlayne

5:30 pm, The Park View Room, 230 Park Avenue, Worcester, MA

The O’Connell Real Estate Company’s development of the Lenox subdivision in 1909 can be called the O’Connells’ “breakout” development – the one that established the company’s place at the top of the list of real estate operations in Worcester.  This talk tells the story of Lenox beginning with a look at its agricultural ancestry and its early development as a subdivision, and continues through the early 1960s to end with a brief summary of the second half of its first century.  Despite the level of success achieved by its developers, the Lenox development itself did not enjoy quite the same easy path that one might expect.  This talk investigates the complex story of the interactions of planning, marketing, and market forces as influenced by economics, demographics, changing tastes, and popular preferences.

Free for members of Preservation Worcester and $5.00 for non-members.  RSVP suggested.
