Join Preservation Worcester's Docent Program

Become part of a passionate community dedicated to exploring, preserving, and sharing our city’s rich history. Each year, individuals from all backgrounds enroll in our Docent Training Course. Whether you're a lifelong Worcester resident or simply eager to learn more about the city, this program offers a fun and rewarding opportunity to deepen your knowledge, meet new friends, and engage with others who share your enthusiasm for history, architecture, and community.
New docents complete a ten-session training course and a research-based capstone project.
Today, more than 25 active docents contribute their talents in a variety of meaningful
ways—and we are always excited to welcome new members to the team.
Course Information
Classes meet Wednesdays, 5:30pm-7:30pm
First semester begins September 9, 2026 and concludes November 11, 2026
Second semester classes meet once a month, January through April
Project presentations will take place in April on several dates, to be decided

What You'll Learn
The first semester consists of ten classes led by expert instructors and enhanced by
neighborhood walking tours. Participants will learn:

How to identify and interpret architectural styles

How to "read" Worcester's historic streetscapes

Techniques for researching buildings, neighborhoods, and local history using publicly
available resources -
Stories that have shaped Worcester's development over time
Create Your Own Project
During the second semester, participants will develop an illustrated presentation or walking
tour on a Worcester history-related topic of their choice. The class will meet once per month
from January through May to provide guidance, support, and opportunities to share progress as
projects take shape.
Tuition FREE
This program is tuition free. The cost of books is approximately $75. After completing the class, participants are asked to make a modest ongoing time commitment to Preservation Worcester's Docent Program.
